For the primary time in U.S. historical past, a normal election presidential debate might be hosted at a traditionally black faculty or college.
Virginia State College in Petersburg, Virginia, will host the second debate of the 2024 normal election cycle on Oct. 1, the Fee on Presidential Debates introduced Monday.
“We’re honored and grateful to have been chosen because the host of the 2024 Presidential Debate,” VSU President Makola Abdullah stated in his speech. New release. “This can be a historic second for our college and for Black universities throughout the nation.”
Further debates might be hosted at Texas State College — a Hispanic-serving establishment — on September 16 and the College of Utah on October 9, the fee stated. A vice presidential debate is scheduled to be held at Lafayette School in Pennsylvania on September 25.
“In 2024, college students at our 4 debate websites will assist deliver one other set of historic conversations to audiences right here and overseas. Their campuses will present 4 distinctive alternatives to hear and be taught,” the committee stated in a press release asserting the websites.
The committee didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark.
GOP presidential main candidates have confronted off in three debates hosted by the Republican Nationwide Committee to date this 12 months. Former President Donald Trump, the more than likely Republican candidate, didn’t attend any of these debates.
A fourth Republican debate is scheduled for December 6 on the College of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
